Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage


The General Conference of UNESCO adopted in 2003, at its 32nd session, the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Convention was ratified by 161 countries and translated in more than 30 languages. The aim of the Convention is safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the raising awareness at local, national and international level of the importance of intangible cultural heritage, the provision of international help and the encouragement of mutual respect and cooperation for the achievement of this goal.

Cyprus ratified the Convention in 2006 and in June 2008 was elected for the first time in the Intergovernmental Committee for the implementation of the Convention until June 2012. In June 2016, Cyprus was re-elected as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee.
