"Lefkaritiko Embroidery Lace: Modi and Modulations II" Exhibition

Presentation of works by 20 Cypriot creators who participated in the Lefkara embroidery lace apprenticeship programme

The exhibition "Lefkaritiko Embroidery: Modi and Modulations II" was inaugurated on 24/04/2017 at the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, in the presence of officials from Cyprus and the Council of Europe. The exhibition of the artworks, created by participants of the Lefkara embroidery lace apprenticeship programme (link previous page), was part of the Programme of Cultural Events in the context of the Cyprus Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly Pedro Agramunt, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulidis and the head of the Cyprus Delegation, Stella Kyriakidou. In her speech, Ms. Kyriakidou said that "we are launching this unique exhibition with exceptional works of art, inspired by the famous Lefkaritiko laces". She referred to the centuries-old tradition that continues in the village of Lefkara from the 14th century, noting that it is passed down from generation to generation. She added that the works authentically represent the Cypriot culture and traditions that continue through the centuries.

President Agramunt said that the Lefkaritiko laces is one of the most famous expressions of the living cultural heritage of Cyprus. "This tradition of centuries continues proudly from generation to generation and has given the people of Lefkara a unique sense of identity and continuity, which remains alive to this day," he said.

The inauguration was greeted by the Program Coordinator and curator of the exhibition, Dr. Antigoni Polyniki, Officer of the Cyprus National Commission UNESCO.
