As a living art, persevering for more than 2000 years, Byzantine chant is considered to be a significant cultural tradition and a comprehensive music system. Highlighting and enhancing musically the liturgical texts of the Orthodox Church, it is inextricably linked to the spiritual life and religious worship. It is part of the common ecclesiastical musical traditions that developed in the geographical area of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (i.e. the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem, as well as present day Orthodox Churches of Greece, Cyprus, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Arabic-speaking Orthodox Churches). It exemplifies the Byzantine and post-Byzantine spirit and culture, with influences from ancient Greek, Syrian and Jewish musical traditions.

This vocal art places its main focus in the rendering of the liturgical or ecclesiastical text. Every aspect of this tradition serves the dissemination and reception of the religious message. Arguably, Byzantine chant exists because of the word (“lexis”/ “logos”). Psaltic art has always been linked to the male voice, due to the specific gender roles during the service. However, women chanters are common in nunneries and participate to some extent in parishes and choirs of Byzantine music. The features of chanting constitute a powerful combination of Greek literature, rhythm and music, intertwined with particular techniques and morphological idioms, transmitted aurally and orally.

The main characteristics of the tradition have remained unchanged over the centuries:

1) It is exclusively vocal music, without instrumental accompaniment. The occasional use of instruments (e.g. “tambouras”, “psaltery” etc.) facilitates the process of learning intricate melodies and intervals, but instruments are never part of chanting in church.

2) It is basically monophonic music. Harmonization is limited to the accompaniment of the melody by “ison” (a bass drone), which enriches the chant.

3) It is a modal musical tradition which uses the ecclesiastical eight-mode system of Oktoechos and the natural scale (non-tempered).

4) Giving precedence to “logos” (the word), it employs different styles of rhythm in order to accentuate the desired syllables of specific words in the liturgical text.

5) Neumatic notation ( “parasimantiki”) is the written medium for transcribing the chants into written form (the neumes express relative pitches instead of absolute pitches and a well-developed system of markings indicate among others duration or tempo and expression).

Passed on mainly aurally and orally from generation to generation, it maintains a cultural wealth that is anchored in timeless and resilient aesthetics. The history of the Byzantine chant dates back to the apostolic times, developing in accordance with the evolution of hymnography.

Τhe core community of the bearers of the element are the clergy and the church cantors (“psaltes” or ”kalophonarides” as they are also called in Cyprus) as well as the monks and nuns, who, chanting at the lectern, praise God and serve the worshipping community. The contribution of the ‘amateur’ cantors is also very significant; they are talented members of the congregation, who chant alongside and assist church cantors every Sunday and during other services, thus participating in the continuation of this heritage and its dissemination in a broader context, not necessarily religious.

Although the art of chanting is strictly prescribed by the Canons of the Church and the performers remain faithful to them, as a living tradition it has undergone a certain evolutionary process in conjunction with historical, theological, ritualistic and aesthetic changes, until it gradually assumed its current form. Within this framework, each leading cantor (“Protopsaltis” or “Lampadarios”) maintains his own personal style, depending on his vocal abilities.

In addition to its performance and transmission in church, Byzantine chant is particularly flourishing due to the dedication of experts and non-experts, men, women and young people, who participate at various degrees and instances in its study, performance and dissemination: students of Byzantine music, members of choirs who perform Byzantine music, musicologists and theology professors and students as well as scholars in relevant fields (archaeologists, philologists, paleographers, anthropologists, etc.).
